Six-month freeze on recovery of farmer loans in Uttarakhand

The Uttarakhand government has put a six-month moratorium on recovery of loans taken by farmers from cooperative banks in view of the damage caused to their crops by intermittent showers and inclement weather.

Giving this information here, Chief Secretary N Ravishankar said interest amount on such loans for the period will be paid by the state government to cooperative banks.

The state government has also urged the central government to put a similar moratorium on recovery of loans taken by farmers in the state from nationalised banks, Ravishankar said.

The Centre has also been requested to pay the interest for the moratorium period on such loans taken by farmers to the nationalised banks, he said.

Continuing snowfall in the upper reaches of Uttarakhand's hill districts and rains every now and then in the plains have damaged tomato, pea and standing wheat crop in the fields.
