Short messaging services (SMS) have registered a steep rise in Gujarat, after cellular companies in the state launched various promotional schemes since mid-May.
Officials at Hutchison, the owners of the Orange brand, said that there has been a six-fold rise in SMS volume per day since mid-May. Hutch launched its first SMS promotional plan in mid-May.
Idea Cellular and Bharti Cellular Ltd officials said that there has been over a 50 per cent growth in SMS per day after the launch of their promotional plans in June. Hutch, which is by far the largest cellular service provider in the state, has registered a 10-fold increase in SMS flow over the past one year.

According to sources, the SMS flow before the promotional scheme for both post- and pre-paid categories, was around three lakh and this has increased to over 20 lakh in just one month.
