At least 50,000 rural households in the remote areas of Uttar Pradesh (UP) are being energized with solar power.

The off-grid solar power panels are being installed by Su-Kam Power Systems across 19 districts and 1,800 villages under the project piloted by UP New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (NEDA).

"We have already 'solarized' 40,000 households in the state and would soon begin the work on 10,000 more households," Su-Kam marketing head (solar) Kartik Sachdev said here.

Besides, the company is also providing employment and skills enhancement training to the people populace at the grassroots.

The state is targeting solar power generation of 500 Mw by 2017. It has already signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with private sector companies to set up solar power plants.

The state government is pursuing solar power agenda in addition to increasing thermal power to provide 22-24 hr power supply in UP before the state goes to polls in the early part of 2017.
