Congress president Sonia Gandhi's public rally at the Shivaji Park did not just cause traffic in Mumbai to stop, but it also brought out bickering in the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) to fore as party's MPs, MLAs and other senior functionary accused MRCC chief Gurudas Kamat of high-handedness.

A few days before the rally, a delegation of senior party leaders had written a letter to the Congress president giving her long list of complaints citing instances of Kamat's high-handedness and even sought the audience from Gandhi.

However, Kamat countered this move by collecting the signatures of MLAs, MPs, district and block presidents on carefully worded letter, which said, "The party is united under Kamat's leadership to make Gandhi's rally successful and bring party into power in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)".

A senior leader from the anti-Kamat camp said: "Which Congressmen will not want to make Gandhi's rally a success ? Who doesn't want to see the party in power in BMC. Whom is he trying to fool ? Us or the party high command."

"We don't have any objection to Kamat being the president and taking the credit if the party comes to power in BMC. What we want from Kamat is that he should listen to the other point of view, respect it and accommodate all the senior leaders in decision making process," he said

The Party is sensing victory in the BMC elections and this has tended to make Kamat overconfident, leaders feel. They have noted that he didn't want the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) to share any responsibility in organising Gandhi's rally.

It was state in-charge general secretary Margaret Alva who shot down Kamat's idea of giving sole responsibility of organising the rally to MRCC and asked MPCC to share equal responsibility in organising the rally, he added.

Party leaders say Kamat's fortunes and his chances of getting a ministership at the centre are linked to the success of the rally and the outcome of the BMC elections.
