South India has emerged the largest exporter of computer software and electronics hardware, with exports touching Rs 21,307 crore in 2001-02.
The northern region, which stood a distant second, recorded exports of Rs 11,048 crore during the same period, according to the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC).
The export of computer software and electronics hardware for the western region stood at Rs 8,916 crore, while for the eastern region it was Rs 1,029 crore.

The southern states also recorded the largest software exports at Rs 19,501 crore, followed by the north (Rs 9,453 crore), west (Rs 6,590 crore) and eastern region (Rs 956 crore).
Karnataka topped the list of software exports at Rs 10,500 crore during 2001-02, while exports for Tamil Nadu stood at Rs 5,875 crore followed by Andhra Pradesh (Rs 2,925 crore), Kerala (Rs 201 crore), and Pondicherry (Rs 0.45 crore), ESC executive director D K Sareen said here.
In the northern region, Uttar Pradesh topped the list of software exports at Rs 4,500 crore, while Delhi clocked exports of Rs 4,000 crore and Haryana Rs 750 crore.
In the western region, Maharashtra exported software worth Rs 6,456 crore, while the figures for Gujarat stood at Rs 134 crore. West Bengal was the largest computer software exporter in the east, with exports touching Rs 705 crore.
The western region was the largest electronics hardware exporter, with exports touching Rs 2,326 crore in 2001-02, followed by the south (Rs 1,806) crore, north (Rs 1,595 crore) and east (Rs 72.94 crore).
