Spice board targets Rs 50,000 cr export by 2025

The Spice Board of India, under Union ministry of Commerce, has set an export target of Rs 30, 000 crore by 2020 and Rs 50,000 crore by 2025.

“We are making efforts to become the processing hub and premier supplier of value added spices and herbs in the industrial, retail and food service segments of the global spices market by meeting the quality requirements,” said G.K.Vidyashankar, Deputy Director(Marketing), Spices Board, Guntur.

He was speaking at a seminar here on Scope of Export Spices from Orissa, organized by Directorate of Export Promotion and Marketing, Government of Orissa in association with Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO).

He said, the export of spices during 2010-11 was Rs 6,840.70 crore against Rs 5,581 crore in the previous year registering a growth of 30 per cent.

It may be noted, 525,750 tonne of spices were exported in 2010-11 compared to 502750 tonne in 2009-10.

Vidyashankar added that India is exporting about 175 spices / spice products to over 160 nations. The countries include United States of America, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia among others.

On export of spices from Orissa, he said, lot of ground work, quality upgradation by the farmers are needed to be done.

Unavailability of specific berth at the Paradip port for food grain exports is also adding to the woes of the spice producers as they are burdened with logistics expenses towards transportation to other ports like Haldia and Vizag, he added.

Kamalkanta Sahoo, Officer in charge, FIEO, Orissa Chapter and JK Sathpathy, director of Directorate of Export Promotion and Marketing, Government of Orissa ruminated on promoting the export of spices from the state.
