The Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) has announced that Spices Board would participate in 'SIAL China 2006', the 7th International Food Beverage, Wine & Spirits exhibition to be held from May 29 " 31, in Shanghai, China. |
Speaking to Business Standard, D K Sarkar, marketing intelligence officer of the Delhi-based board, said that China was emerging as a potential market for food ingredients and different food items. |
"Though China is a producer of spices, it imports them from other countries due to heavy consumption in the country. It produces only a few varieties of pepper, chilies, garlic, star anise, ginger and turmeric and the vast requirement of many other spices is met only from imports," he said. |
As the food industry in China is poised for tremendous growth, the consumption of spices is growing rapidly. Against this background, India has got a good scope to market its spices, spice products, etc. The main focus of the board during 'SIAL China 2006' would be to promote branded products, spice oils and oleoresins, spice powders, etc in the Chinese market, Sarkar said. |
Though some Indian companies are doing business in China, the value and quantity of merchandise is very insignificant, according to Sarkar. |
Moreover, China requires a variety of spices that are not grown in the country to meet the unprecedented growth in the food processing industry. This offers good opportunity for Indian traders to tap the market in China by frequent participation in fairs and exhibitions there. |
Last year, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce for Native Produce and Spices had sent a delegation to India to study the industry in general, said Sarkar. |
While the board plans to showcase the Indian strengths as well as introduce a couple of companies to the Chinese trade during the fair, the Indian companies already operating in China are intending to reiterate their presence through the exhibition. The board has reserved a stall measuring 18 sq metres with ITPO for its participation in the exhibition. |
Sarkar said he was confident that at least five big exporters from India would be in Shanghai to take part in the fair. |
