The Maharashtra government has cleared a proposal extending the package of incentives offered to co-operative sugar factories in the state to 21 private sugar mills as well.
Of these private mills, 18 are controlled by BJP functionaries, while the remaining three are run by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders.
National vice-president of the BJP for Maharashtra and Goa, Gopinath Munde told mediapersons that the move would enable these mills to tide over the crisis that is enveloping the sugar industry.

The package extended to these mills includes the exemption from payment of the purchase tax on sugar cane as well as a Re 1 subsidy per kilo of the sweetening commodity that is exported out of the country.
