State-owned coal firms miss production target

Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SSCL) fell short of their production targets in July this year, according to official figures released today.

“During the month of July 2008, the actual coal produced by CIL and SCCL was 30.02 million tonnes as against the annual action plan (AAP) target of 32.44 million tonnes,” an official release said.

It added that the actual coal production by CIL and SCCL during July 2007 was 28.74 million tonnes.

“Therefore, there was a growth of about 4.45 per cent in July 2008 over the corresponding period the previous year,” it said, adding that coal dispatches to the power sector during the month stood at 25.56 million tonnes.

Going by the monthly and progressive plan expenditure of CIL, SCCL and Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd (NLCL) for and up to July 2008, the cumulative expenditure by the three stood at 15.91 per cent of the Rs 6,597-crore plan outlay for 2007-08 (revised).

Of the Rs 3,214.70-crore total plan outlay of CIL, the cumulative expenditure was 12.86 per cent, while that of SCCL stood at 12.42 per cent against the total outlay of Rs 665.30 crore.

NLCL’s cumulative expenditure stood at 20.36 per cent of the Rs 2,717-crore plan outlay. Further, the release said, in July a coal block was allocated to Maharashtra State Power Generation Corporation (MAHAGENCO).

“One coal block — Bhivkund coal block — was allocated to MAHAGENCO on July 17, 2008, under the tariff-based competitive bidding route,” it said.

The outstanding dues, which include amount payable by the power sector companies to the coal firms as on July 22, was Rs 1,991.58 crore (provisional) as against Rs 1973.58 crore up to May 23, the release said.

The undisputed dues accounted for Rs 955.98 crore of the total outstanding dues, it said. The outstanding dues of NLCL as on July 31 was Rs 908.18 crore.
