Betting on a fruitful election result, the Indian markets are roaring, as Table 1 shows, with the Sensex seemingly on an upward trend. But middle- and small-capitalisation companies haven't done so well over the past year - even though they,too, have seen a marked uptick of late, as Table 2 shows.
Year to date, the Sensex has easily outperformed many other major markets, as Table 3 reveals.
Still, not all sectors are booming. Table 4 shows that realty and consumer durables still worry investors. The public sector has not only lost value but has done so at a very low price-earnings multiple, as Table 5 shows. The inter-sectoral variation in P/E is very high indeed.
