Steel exports increased in the June-August period after witnessing a slump in April and May. The industry saw an overall increase of 1.6 per cent in the April-July period, compared to the corresponding period last year. India exported 9.08 lakh tonnes of steel during the first four months of the current financial year. Last year, the exports in the same period stood at 8.94 lakh tonnes.
According to A S Firoz, chief economist at the Joint Plant Committee of the steel ministry, the main markets for India have been the European Union, Africa and West Asia.
