The relations between the Centre and Left parties have never looked as shaky as they did today after the Left staged a walkout in Parliament - the Left's first since the government came to power- over the Honda workers lathicharge incident. |
In clear defiance of the Government-Left pact on maintaining cordiality on issues raised in Parliament, Left leaders said the reality on the ground was quite different from the evidence presented by Home Minister Shivraj Patil in the two houses. |
Left leaders rubbished the figure of 92 injured presented by the Home Minister and said their calculations indicated a much higher figure. The Left puts the number of workers involved in the agitation at between 600-700. |
"Using the excuse of magisterial inquiry, all those who are responsible for the attacks are being allowed to continue in their positions," said Communist party of India (Marxist) CPI M MP Brinda Karat. |
She said the Left's immediate demand from the Haryana government was the suspension of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) who had led the lathicharge on workers. She said they had participated in the lathicharge on the relatives of workers admitted to the Gurgaon Civil Hospital. |
The Left parties also demanded a government order asking for a judicial inquiry into the incident headed by a sitting Supreme Court judge. The government has agreed to the judicial inquiry but has decided to get a retired High Court judge to head the inquiry. |
Left leaders however said they would not be satisfied with a judicial inquiry headed by a retired High Court Judge. |
Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and Trade Unionist Gurudas Dasgupta said he had conveyed this to the government at a meeting with Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gulam Nabi Azad earlier in the day today. |
The Left has also asked for a compensation for those injured and for the immediate and unconditional release of all workers from jail. |
