A five-member delegation from Sudan, led by the minister for agriculture and forestry, Mohammad Alameen Kabbashi Eisa, visited Punjab Agricultural University yesterday and met Vice-Chancellor Kirpal Singh Aulakh, as well as other senior scientists and officers of the University. |
The minister told the vice-chancellor a major concern was food security for the 36 million people of Sudan. |

"We know that the green revolution in Punjab has changed India from a food deficit state to a surplus state. We are here to know the secrets of this success",the minister told Vice Chancellor. "And also how the University can help them to improve their agriculture." |

He further said since Punjab and Sudan have similar topography and crops (wheat and sorghum), his government was keen to know how the success of Punjab could be replicated in Sudan. |

The Vice Chancellor said "Consolidation of land holdings, mechanization of farming and providing right inputs in terms of improved seed and their production technology were the major elements that triggered the Green Revolution. Besides, a strong university-farmers linkage too played a key role.But the major credit goes to the hard working Punjab farmers", he added. |

Briefing the visitors about the working of the University, Vice Chancellor told that the PAU was the second University that got established in India in 1962 on the pattern of Land Grant Universities of USA. |

The University has integrated teaching, research and extension programmes. Over the years, the University has developed great rapport with farmers. " More than 1.2 lakh farmers visit the University at Kisan Melas every year during the months of March and September to get seeds of new varieties and new knowledge on farm front", remarked Dr. Aulakh. |

Vice Chancellor promised every help to the visiting Minister and agreed on signing of a MOU with his Sudan government. The delegates also held a meeting with the tractor manufacturers, which were coordinated by the Registrar Dr. V.K. Sharma at Farmers' Service Centre. More than 10 tractor manufacturers from different parts of the state participated in this meeting. |
