The government has appointed Disinvestment Secretary Sumit Bose as Officer on Special Duty in the expenditure department of the finance ministry. This will pave way for Bose to succeed Sushma Nath as expenditure secretary when the latter retires later this month.

Nath, a 1974 batch IAS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is retiring on May 31 after completing her two-month extension. Bose, who is from the same cadre, may take charge on June 1 as expenditure secretary. He may continue to hold the charge of the disinvestment department until furthers orders.

Bose is likely to be the next finance secretary, as after the retirement of Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitra in June, the 1976 batch officer will be the senior most among all the secretaries in the finance ministry. Surajit Mitra, a 1977 batch IAS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, may succeed Sunil Mitra as revenue secretary. He is presently additional chief secretary in Assam. Sunil Mitra is a 1975 batch officer from the West Bengal cadre.
