A decline in non-traditional revenues accounted for over a fifth of the total shortfall of Rs 2,322 crore in gross traffic receipts of Indian Railways in the current financial year.

According to the revised budget estimates, Indian Railways recorded non-traditional revenues of Rs 6,450 crore as against the budget target of Rs 6,963 crore. Gross traffic receipts during the year decreased to Rs 103,917 crore as against the initial estimate of Rs 106,239 crore.

While earnings from other coaching services decreased by 5.3 per cent over the budget estimates to Rs 2,750 crore in 2011-12, sundry earnings (revenues earned from development of railway land) fell 8.9 per cent to Rs 3,700 crore.
