The Surat Special Economic Zone (SurSEZ), the only private sector SEZ in the country developed by the Diamond & Gem Development Corporation Ltd (DGDC), is aiming to achieve exports of Rs 1,500 crore in the financial year 2004-05.

SurSEZ also celebrated it's fourth anniversary on Monday.

Addressing media persons on Tuesday, DGDC chairman S N Sharma said, "SurSEZ has so far achieved exports of Rs 906.25 crore in the current financial year. We are aiming exports of Rs 1,500 crore before the end of the financial year."

"SurSEZ is the first and only SEZ in the private sector in the entire country. It was an experiment, which we have made a success. The zone currently has 86 operational units involved in manufacturing/processing of textiles, diamonds, engineering goods, fasteners, jewellery, laser machines and pharmaceuticals. We are expecting another 46 units to become operational by March 2005, which shows that the zone has got good response," he said.

"The development commissioner has issued 200 letters of permission. Once these units are set up, they would further add to the growth momentum of the zone," Sharma said.

He also attributed the success of the SurSEZ to the Gujarat government and the people.

"The government and the people of Gujarat are very positive-minded. We planned similar projects in other states as well, but had to drop the same as there was a lot of government interference and bureaucratic hassles. We have got support from all quarters in Gujarat, which has enabled us to become successful," the DGDC chairman said.

Sharma also spoke about the plans for expansion of SurSEZ.

"We expect SurSEZ to become operational to it's full capacity in the next two to three years. It currently employs 1,100 people, but we expect the figure to touch 11,000. The zone has been meticulously planned, and has provisions for housing complexes, club, shopping centre, cinema house and other social amenities. A school, medical centre and jewellery training institute are already functional. We want to develop SurSEZ further, and make it an ideal special economic zone," he said.
