Initially, the water from Thamirabarani will be allowed to flow through Radhapuram and Sathankulam which were dry areas. Later water from the Cauvery will be diverted through Kundaru crossing Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts.
In the last stage, the channels and waterbodies between Chaiyaru and Sathanoor will be linked for irrigation purposes.
He also said that the government planned to carry out maintenance work in ponds and other waterbodies with the help of World Bank.
The PWD is also planning to construct new schools, taluk offices and government buildings by spending Rs 900 crore this year, he said.
