According to a government’s release, the chief minister has ordered to set up an IIIT at a total cost of Rs 128 crore to create a knowledge-based society and to ensure that students of the state get world class education. Around 56.37 acres have been allocated by the Tamil Nadu government at Sethurapatti in Sri Rangam taluk.
It was further stated that the new IIIT will be set up in association with the Central government and the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The statement further said, the chief minister ordered the functioning of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) from the academic year 2013-14 from the campus of Bharathidasan Institute of Technology in Tiruchy, till the new campus gets ready.
Since it requires some time to construct buildings in this land to house the institute, Jayalalithaa, in a bid to prevent waste of time and to protect the interests of students, has ordered its functioning from the campus of Bharathidasan Institute of Technology from the academic year 2013-14, said the release.
Also, the Chief Minister has allocated Rs 2.17 crore to build compoud walls and to lay approach roads to seven polytechnic colleges started at seven districts. Each college will get Rs 31 lakh, said the release.
In an other release, the Chief Minister announced that 44 hostels of Adi- Dravida and tribals across the State would get their own buildings. Under the Adi Dravida and tribal welfare department over 1,300 Adi- Dravida hostels and 42 hostels for denotified communities are being run.
This year, the Chief Minister has ordered construction of buildings for 44 hostels of Adi Dravida and tribals at a cost of Rs 35.04 crore.
