A task force, set up by the district administration, zilla parishat or Nanjangud Industrial Association, has been mooted to enhance the quality of life and environment in Nanjangud.

The town, located 23 kms from Mysore, boasts some of the leading industries in Karnataka, 23 kms off Mysore.

The suggestion is part of the observations submitted during the public hearing on the proposed expansion of Jubiliant Organosys Ltd. located in the KIADB area of Nanjangud town on September 7.

As a programme of scientific awareness 2004 taken up across the country by the National Council of Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Government of India, a two-member team of the People's Science Forum (PSF) visited the industrial area and the nearby Kallahalli village, on behalf of the Karnataka Rajya Vigyana Parishat (KRVP) on September 4.

"Looking beyond the expansion plan of Jubiliant Organosys Ltd., it is necessary to look into the reasons for the serious deterioration of the environment in the Nanjangud Industrial Layout. This demands a more scientific and careful environmental management approaches in the industrial settlement. Just a few kms away from the layout, there is an environmental pollution crises. The matter is already before the the law and Lok Ayukta. A deliberate or inadvertent slippage here, not considering the deteriorating groundwater resources in the vicinity and the quality of life, is violation of the basic human rights and environmental protection mandatory legal requirements. Therefore, the serious question now before those concerned here is how to sustain it as a cluster in a deteriorated environmental setting," V Jagannath said.

While making the observations, the note submitted by the environmental scientist and PSF hon. co-ordinator suggested action plans.

Besides a task force, he suggested fulfiling the most crucial EIA and EMP for the industry and initiation of a comprehensive carrying capacity study along with a management plan for improving the quality of life in the industrial belt.
