Engineering colleges would receive Rs 12.5 crore each
Phase II of the World Bank-assisted Central government’s Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) to improve the quality of technical education was formally launched here in Bangalore today. Under the programme, 14 engineering colleges in Karnataka would get assistance amounting to Rs 228 crore to promote research and innovation.
Under this phase of TEQIP, the 14 engineering colleges would receive Rs 12.5 crore each. Of them, 10 colleges will also get an approval, on a competitive first-come-first-served basis, the chance to set up centres of excellence for multi-disciplinary research in specific areas. For this, each institution would receive an additional Rs 5 crore.
The Centre will route 75 per cent of funds for the Rs 228 crore project from the World Bank, while the state government will contribute the rest. The state today signed an MoU with these 14 colleges on implementing the TEQIP Phase-2.
On the occasion, Karnataka Higher Education Minister V S Acharya said here today the programme also aims to increase enrolment into post-graduate courses while increasing R&D in engineering.
The project also improves the competence of faculty from project and non-project institutions through pedagogical training.

It would also support innovations for improving state and institutional level management and education practices and mentor the project institutions towards quality improvement and to audit institutional performance in achieving their respective targets, Acharya said.
The Phase-II will be for a period of four years, from 2010-2014, officials said.
