Telangana CM lays foundation stone for mega textile park in Warangal

Over a dozen companies have come forward to set up their manufacturing operations at the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park with a combined investment of over Rs 3,900 cr

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park, which is a fibre-to-fabric integrated textile cluster proposed to be built on 1,200 acres of land near Shayampet in the Warangal district, about 170 km from here.

This is the first industrial park project to reach the ground-breaking stage in three years after the formation of the state. The project also assumes significance due to its location as the cotton-rich Warangal region was once a hotbed of Naxalite activities in Telangana.

The government has proposed to develop state-of-the-art infrastructure featuring common effluent treatment and zero-liquid discharge facilities besides ready-built factory sheds in this park at an investment of more than Rs 1,000 crore. There is also a provision to expand the park to 2,000 acres in the future. 

Further, the government has already come out with a slew of incentives and subsidies targeting investments in the textile sector.

Chief Minister Rao announced that over dozen companies, including a big textile firm from South Korea, have come forward to set up their manufacturing operations in the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park with a combined investment of over Rs 3,900 crore. "This is going to be one of the largest textile parks in the country. All those who had migrated to places like Surat, Bhivandi, and Sholapur following the closure of the Azam Jahi Textile Mill in Warangal will have a chance to return to their villages as the new textile park will generate thousands of such jobs," Rao said.

Companies that have signed memorandums of understanding to set up units in the textile park include Korean company Youngone Corporation (Rs 1,000 crore), Welspun Group (Rs 750 crore), and Chirpal Group (Rs 700 crore), among others.

With an estimated 27,000 direct and 50,000 indirect employment potential, the textile park is viewed as a major job creator for local people in Warangal.

Telangana is one of the largest producers of long-staple cotton with a production of around 6 million bales per annum. Cotton cultivation accounts for almost 50 per cent of the total Kharif acreage in the current season. The upcoming textile park will enhance the scope for value addition to the cotton crop within the state.
