Teledensity up from 3.6 in March 2001 to 4.9 in December 2002
Terming the growth in telecommunications services a success story, the Economic Survey for 2002-03 says the sector is set to witness lively competition among private firms and a strong role for the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).
Highlighting the achievements of the telecom sector, the survey says owing to the increasing popularity of wireless technologies, the number of new telephone connections went up by 17 per cent during April-December 2002, adding 5.2 million subscribers, as against a 24 per cent decline in new phones in the corresponding period last year.
