The Indian apparel industry has registered 32 per cent growth in exports, touching $8.2 billion in 2005-06 compared with $6.2 billion for the previous fiscal. The projected target for the present fiscal is $9.5 billion. |

"With the keen competition in international markets, reaching $8.2 billion in exports is a new milestone for the industry. In the January-March period this year, we have even registered a higher growth rate than China for apparel exports," he told reporters at an Apparel Export Promotion Council (APEC) event on Tuesday. |

He also called for setting up of more training institutions to meet the needs of the industry. |

The Indian garment industry has a potential of 2.3 million jobs but there is dire need for a trained workforce. Seven apparel training and design centres were opened across the country in the last fiscal, taking the total number of such institutions to 30, AEPC Chairman Vijay Agarwal said. He added that three more such institutions were in the pipeline. |
