Thousands of textile retailers and wholesalers across the state closed down their shutters today protesting against the inclusion of the textile trade under the Value Added Tax (VAT) net.
The state-wide textile trade bandh call was given by the Andhra Pradesh Federation of Textile Associations, an apex body of over 150 textile trade associations representing all the regions in the state.
The federation has sent telegrams to the prime minister, the union finance minister, the textile minister and the state chief minister, urging them to reconsider the proposal.
Textile traders at Guntur, Chirala and some other places took up rail roko and road roko programmes against the inclusion of textile trade under VAT net.
