The fines imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Google are more than half the total penalties imposed by the regulator in the five-year period between April 2017 and June 2022.

However, data shows that its record in collections has been dismal. Along with it, the regulator has also struggled to fill its vacancies.

The CCI has also failed to fill positions, as a third of them lie vacant. It does not help that budgetary allocations have been declining as well. Meanwhile, only Rs 198 crore from the Rs 4,369 crore imposed as penalties was paid until June 2022. Data further indicates a poor performance in clearance. The CCI had a clearance rate of 48.6 per cent.
