The Tamil Nadu government has allotted over Rs 6 crore towards road safety measures and campaigns during 2007-08 in an attempt to create road safety awareness and reduce accidents. |
Between January and November 2007, 11,130 people lost their lives in 54,553 road accidents in Tamil Nadu. In Chennai alone, 1,090 people were killed in 6,409 road accidents during the period. |

The vehicular population in the state has been growing by 10-11 per cent annually. As on December 1, 2007, the total number of vehicles in the state were 97.49 lakh, including 6,72,541 transport vehicles and 90,77,336 non-transport vehicles. The total number of vehicles included 76 lakh two-wheelers. |

The state government has allotted Rs 65.5 lakh to Chennai district collector and commissioner of police and asked them to undertake various safety measures involving stakeholders like the police, health, information and publicity, and education departments of state government, besides voluntary and non-governmental organisations and others involved in the field. It has also allotted Rs 5.50 crore to various district collectors and commissioners of police of six towns to implement various road safety measures. |

The road safety week was celebrated in Tamil Nadu from January 1 to 7, coinciding with the Centre's decision to observe the 19th Road Safety Week during the same period on the theme, 'Drive to Care, Not to Dare!' |

The government has said that driving licenses of 7,184 drivers were suspended and 4,969 cancelled for drunken driving during January-November 2007. Similarly, driving licenses of 8,372 drivers involved in fatal accidents were suspended and that of 727 drivers cancelled. Besides, the permits of 581 transport vehicles involved in major accidents have either been suspended or cancelled during January-November 2007. |

The government also said that 100 'emergency accident relief centres' are successfully functioning all over the state to provide immediate medical assistance to accident victims. |

These centres saved 10,868 lives during the January-November period. |
