The Tamil Nadu government has announced an interim relief of Rs 250 per month, a bonus of 8.33 per cent and an ex-gratia of 1.67 per cent to be paid to over two lakh workers and employees of State Transport Corporations (STCs) and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

The bonus and the ex-gratia will be applicable to the employees and workers of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation as well at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore.

"We have decided that pending the formal commencement of wage settlement negotiations, the workers and employees deserve appreciation for the unstinted co-operation extended for setting right the fiscal position. They have co-operated in ensuring the turnaround in the performance of these organisations," said chief minister J Jayalalithaa in a press release.

The interim relief will be adjusted against the wage settlement when it will be concluded. The ex-gratia of 1.67 per cent totalling to 10 per cent including the 8.33 per cent will be payable only to those employees who received bonus at 8.33 per cent last year.

The additional cost for the STCs on account of the interim relief, which will be paid along with the monthly salary from October, 2004, is Rs 34.52 crore a year and the cost of arrears to be paid for the period between September 1, 2003 and September 30, 2004 is Rs 37.40 crore.

For TNEB, the additional cost accruing due interim relief is Rs 26.10 crore and cost of arrears is Rs 23.38 crore. The government has also allowed the cashing of earned leaves at their credit for 15 days in a year as per the annual cycle.

Jayalalithaa also said that she will treat as leave the period when the workers went on strike prior to December 12, 2000, if they are eligible except in the case of employees against whom criminal cases are pending.

She also reiterated her commitment to take Tamil Nadu to the number one position in the country.
