As part of its plan to make Chennai and other major cities in the state slum-free, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) would spend over Rs 7,500 crore on constructing new tenements and houses for people living in slums.
According to the TNSCB Bill, which was placed in the Assembly recently, the government has taken up construction of 88,679 tenements at a cost of around Rs 3,000 crore between 2006 and 2011.
Similarly, under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, the government would construct 35,270 tenements as integrated townships in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore at a total cost of Rs 1,208.55 crore.
Among others, a Rs 590.72 crore project, with the help of the World Bank, is slated for completion by March 31, 2010.
The board has been designated as the agency to implement the rehabilitation and resettlement component of the Elevated Expressway programme for which new houses for 14,000 families are to be constructed at a cost of Rs 560 crore.
