Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation Ltd (TTDC), the Tamil Nadu government-owned corporation, is looking at private investors to develop budget and star category hotels at major tourism destinations in the state. |
The corporation, which has privatised 25 of its 45 hotels, is planning to set up these hotels on the model of the 'Ginger' hotel chain run by the Tata group. |
According to M Rajaram, Director of Tourism, government of Tamil Nadu and Managing Director of TTDC, the corporation has identified Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Kumbakonam and Chettinad as potential places for setting up new hotels. |
"Our main focus is to involve the private sector to invest in setting up new hotels and TTDC will only play the role of a facilitator. We have already identified three places for setting up hotels in Chennai and Madurai, and looking for an ideal place in other major tourism destinations," he said. |
The corporation is presently working out the terms and conditions for private sector developers. "We want private companies to make an assessment of what needs to be done at a particular tourism destination. It will be left to them what type of hotel should they set up and the number of rooms to be built, among other aspects," Rajaram told Business Standard. |
He said, once private players submit their proposals, the board of directors of the TTDC will take a final decision in this regard. |
Rajaram said the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has recently announced incentives to convert heritage buildings into heritage hotels. |
During the next one year, the corporation is looking at converting at least 25 buildings into heritage hotels across the state. |
