Torrential rain hits Kolkata, 8 deadBS Reporter / Kolkata July 3, 2007Banks and stockbroking offices functioned normally but educational institutions were closed and government offices ran empty after 160mm of rainfall in the early hours today flooded most of Kolkata and adjoining North and South 24-Parganas districts.Flights operated behind schedule while long-distance and local trains started operating only after 1030am from Howrah and Sealdah stations.A large number of buses plied on the roads but there were few passengers.Eight people, including six of a family, were killed. Many roads were under knee to waist deep water.Six members of a family died and one was injured when their hut collapsed in the rains near Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas district. One person was killed in a house collapse in the metropolis.Kolkata
