The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has expressed shock over huge quantity of toxic waste lying in the premises of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and Mumbai Port Trust.
"It is shocking to learn that huge quantity of toxic waste is lying in the premises of JNPT and MbPT," NCP spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said.
In a letter to chiefs of two ports, Tapase raised questions regarding safe disposal of these toxic material, who was responsible for accumulation of such huge quantity of waste and what action will be taken against them.
"Why has this hazardous waste not been eliminated earlier as per the standard procedure prescribed by the ministry," Tapase asked.
The accumulation of such a huge quantity of toxic waste has posed a grave threat not only to the life of humans and other living being but also to the flora and fauna, he said.
The recent collision of ships off the Mumbai coast and also the leakage of chlorine gas at MbPT warehouse in July has shown how vulnerable we citizens are to the mismanagement of those in charge, Tapase said.
"NCP will not allow any person or organisation to play with the lives of the innocent and will take up this issue to the highest level for redressal," he said.
