The 24-hour trade bandh called by trade associations on Thursday in protest against the government's decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail, was almost total in West Bengal with most wholesale markets and retail shops closed.

Spokesman of Confederation of West Bengal Trade Associations, the apex body of prominent trade associations of the state, said that the bandh was 90 per cent successful. "Most wholesale and retail markets were closed in the state, but in certain pockets some were open. That is why we are saying it is 90 per cent successful," spokesman of the confederation Feroz H Ali said.

The traders were of the view that the Centre's decision would spell disaster for small traders in particular endangering the livelihood of millions.

Most political parties and trade unions supported the token strike.
