Trade through the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road may be possible within this year as almost all the technical hiccups have been cleared. |
"We have agreed in principle to allow trade through Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route. There are some necessities to be fulfilled," Union Home Secretary V K Duggal told reporters in Srinagar today. |
Duggal said the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was being upgraded for plying of trucks. He said a scanning system would also be installed. "Road surface has to be improved and full-fledged scanning system has to be put in place to check what is coming and what is going," he elaborated. |
Duggal asserted that all the bottlenecks were being removed and all requirements for allowing trade on the route would be fulfilled soon. |
Accompanied by a team of officials, Duggal also reviewed the reconstruction and rehabilitation process in earthquake-hit areas of the state. |
"The state government has sent us proposals for more than Rs 700 crore. An inter-ministerial committee has been formed to look into the proposals. We assure the state government that the central government will release more funds as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his last visit to the state himself promised all possible support for rehabilitation of the earthquake affected areas," he said. |
Duggal said that the union government had so far released Rs 242 crore to the state government for the rehabilitation of quake victims. |
