To enable the customer select long distance carrier for their STD/ISD calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today issued a consultation paper on 'Carrier Selection' including possibilities of allowing long distance service providers to issue calling cards. This would help the consumer in selecting services provider best suited to their specific needs particularly in terms of price and quality. According to Trai, the service providers, both long distance and access, also stand to benefit from this initiative. The long distance service providers would be able to sell their services directly to the consumers, earn more revenue and expand their network to become competitive. The access provider would benefit as the increased competition would decrease prices and increase the origination of long distance calls and revenue accruable to them.
