The Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTransco) and the public utilities in distribution sector have finalised an action plan to further reduce transmission and distribution(T&D) losses to around 18 per cent in the next two years from present 21.11 per cent, which will enable the power utility to save Rs 300 crore.
Rachel Chatterjee, the CMD of APTransco, stated in a release that the reduction in T&D losses had helped the utility to avoid any rise in power tariff during the last three tariff orders despite a severe drought situation.
She said that the 10 per cent reduction in T&D losses in the past four years at an annual average of 2 to 3 per cent was the best performance of any state power utility in the country.
Impressed by the performance of the power utilities of Andhra Pradesh, the Rural Electrification Corporation(REC) had agreed to provide further assistance of Rs 1,072 crore to invest in T&D sector in the year 2003-04 .
Chatterjee expressed satisfaction over the loss reduction of around Rs 1,000 crore in the past few years.
"Andhra Pradesh is among the very few states like Maharastra, Tamil Nadu and Haryana, which are performing well on the reforms front. The state has becomeligible for a share of incentives from the centre to the tune of Rs 8,000 crore. This was considered based on loss reduction on realisation as savings, and not the accruals of the state power utilities," she informed.
"It is a good news for AP consumers that the power utilities have not proposed any hike in tariffs in the latest proposals submitted to APERC for the year 2004-05. This was possible with the reduction in T&D losses and the unstinted support of the government by providing sufficient subsidy to the extent of around Rs 2,400 crore annually in the last few years," Chatterjee said.
Chatterjee also informed that Transco and Discoms were planning to invest Rs 1,454 crore in the next financial year in the thrust areas like erection of number sub-stations, particularly 33/11 kv sub-stations to further improve quality and reliability of power supply besides reducing losses.
