In a double blow to Tata Power, the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity has ruled in favour of Reliance Energy (REL) in two cases relating to electricity supply to retail consumers in Mumbai. In its judgement, the tribunal accepted REL's contention that Tata Power did not have the licence to supply electricity to retail consumers in Mumbai. In another case, the tribunal set aside an order by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) which, on a plea by Tata Power, had barred Anil Ambani-controlled REL from giving rebate to its consumers in Mumbai.
