The truck population in Tamil Nadu is estimated to be around 1,74,000 and the state's trucking community continues to add 3000 vehicles every year.
T Sengodan, the president of State Lorry Owners Federation, Tamil Nadu, said to control the excess supply of trucks in the state, the federation had been sending regular petitions to the state to control the issue of permits for the next five years.
The Namakkal region, which is the prime trucking centre in the state alone, has over 15,000 trucks.
