UAE inks nuclear pact with South Korea

In what is being described as another boost to its peaceful nuclear programme, The UAE signed a cooperation agreement with South Korea, adding to similar deals it already has with the US, France, UK and Japan.

UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash and South Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Kwon Jong Rak signed the agreement on Monday.

South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, who is on a three-day official visit to the UAE, and Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai witnessed the signing of the UAE-South Korean bilateral agreement.

As per the agreement, the South Korean government will help UAE in developing its peaceful nuclear programme by transferring nuclear technology, equipments and expertise to the oil-rich nation for a period of twenty years.

The agreement will also allow specialised Korean companies to compete for bringing in technology, equipment and skills to UAE, a statement released on the UAE's official news agency, Wam, said.

This is South Korea's first agreement with a Middle East country.

UAE has already signed similar agreements with France and US and has an MoU with the United Kingdom.
