CBI, the apex industry body in the UK, has named John Cridland as its new director general and successor to Richard Lambert, who vacates his office on January 28 next year. Cridland will take over from Lambert on January 31.

Cridland, 49, is the first “insider” to move to the corner office in the history of CBI. He is currently CBI’s deputy director general.

Speaking to Business Standard after the announcement at CBI headquarters in London recently, Cridland said. CBI would push for further liberalisation in India and urged India to further open the financial sector.

Britain’s lobby list for India has for long been freeing sectors like media, retail, finance and legal sector. Cridland said that among all these sectors, his focus in India would be the financial services sector. Discussing the new government’s plans to put a cap on immigration from non-EU countries, he said concessions would have to be made by the UK government in making exception for Tier–2 business visas and intra-company transfers.
