The ministry of civil aviation has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a detailed pre-feasibility report for the proposed international airport at Jewar in Greater Noida, a state government official said.

"It is a continuation of an earlier study that the government had carried out in 2002-03 to ascertain the feasibility of the proposed site. We will fine-tune the study and submit a detailed report to the ministry by July for perusal," he said.

The Jewar airport project was in a state of limbo during the earlier Samajwadi Party's rule in Uttar Pradesh.

The ministry has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to send its proposal following which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will carry out its feasibility study. "Once the AAI study is conducted, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (the apex body for air safety globally) will carry out safety audits before a final go-ahead is given," a civil aviation ministry official said.

The Uttar Pradesh government has already earmarked about 1,500 acres for the proposed airport and another 2,500 acres for an airport economic zone, which would comprise hotels, restaurants, shopping arcades for other allied purposes.

The entire project will cost up to Rs 10,000 crore.

The state government's proposal, according to civil aviation ministry official, is likely to be taken up at the Committee on Infrastructure headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday.

According to the Uttar Pradesh government, the land acquisition for the proposed airport project will be started once the Centre clears the airport project at Jewar. "Since we have identified the land, acquisition should not be an issue," the official said.

The state government has also asked the Centre to relax the norms that disallows two airports within a vicinity of 150 km.

It is likely that the norm would be relaxed as has been the case with the Navi Mumbai airport, which is barely 75 km away from the existing Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport at Mumbai.
