The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to increase infotech turnover from Rs 3,000 crore to about Rs 20,000 crore by 2008.
This would increase the state's share in the country's infotech output from 5 per cent to 10 per cent, said G B Pattnaik, information technology and electronic secretary of the UP government.
He said UP and Karnataka were number one and two in the electronics and infotech sector in the late eighties and early nineties of the last century. But the state lost its prime position and was overtaken by states, like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

But the state would regain its position soon. It would initially prosper as a secondary centre for big infotech companies, he said.
Several large infotech companies, which have a large base in one centre, are looking for secondary centres so that in case of emergency they could move to that station and service their clients without any perceptible disruption in services. Infosys is setting up a 1,500-man secondary centre in Mauritius.
Recently, Adobe made a fresh Rs 32 crore investment and the Bangalore-based ST Microelectronics Ltd Rs 25 crore investment in Noida.
Neo Magic, a Santa Clara-based chip making company, is already ensconced in Kanpur and has opened a second centre in Noida.
To achieve the Rs 20,000 crore infotech turnover target, the government is planning to establish a web city in Noida.
It will have ready to move in 500,000 sq ft space. In five years, 17 million sq ft space will be available at the web city.
An expression of interest for a private sector promoter will be invited in three months and land acquisition will begin at the special technical zone-5 in Noida, close to 8-lane Expressway.
The state government has taken steps to remove functional bottlenecks.
