According to R K Singh, joint director, industries (Agra division), this census had been initiated on the instructions of the Union ministry for industries and commerce, which is preparing a programme for industrial development in Uttar Pradesh.
So far, he said, the data available with the district industrial centres of the Agra and Aligarh divisions indicated the existence of 34,367 registered industrial units in both the divisions, of which 5,839 units were in Agra, 7,231 in Aligarh, 5,197 in Mathura, 4,182 in Etah, 3,380 in Mainpuri, 3,087 in Firozabad and 2,751 units in Hathras.
Of these units, some could have shut down while some others could have shifted and the current status of these units will only be assessed after the completion of the census.
Singh said the department of industries was currently training its employees to conduct the census, while the managements of all industrial units had been sent letters to provide the requisite information about their units on a prescribed proforma, verification would be done by the department's census team.
Inputs and suggestions from trade and industrial organisations will also be incorporated in the census by the department.

The database will be made available to the central government to ensure the timely preparation of the industrial development programme for the state, he said.
