The Uttar Pradesh government will set up a modern abattoir at a cost of Rs 100 crore in Meerut under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

A grant of Rs 15 crore by the Union food processing ministry will also be utilised for the project.

The abattoir is likely to not only boost meat export, but create new job opportunities in the region by complementing the local packaging industry.

Besides, it will lead to the setting up of the ancillary units in the region, which will help the people acquire new employable skills and hence lead to the economic amelioration.

A New Delhi-based consultant to the project had already submitted a detailed survey and project report to the state government in this regard.

The land for the project spanning five hectares has been identified in Meerut.
