Us To Review Steel Duty Exemptions

The US has decided to review exemption of duties for flat-rolled steel products to developing nations, particularly India and Turkey, officials said.

The decision was taken following pressure mounted by the US steel firms. US steel producers claimed that these countries were violating rules and guidelines under Section 201 and were exporting more than the 3 per cent limit of total consumption set for them.

A high-level team comprising officials from the steel, commerce and external affairs ministries is likely to visit the US soon.

Indian steel firms have, however, declined of any violation of the Section 201, saying they have not exceeded the 3 per cent limit. The probe procedure will take at least four to five months.

It is understood that the Indian Steel Alliance has been asked to provide a white paper giving details of exports.
