India should aim to generate a fifth of its capacity expansion in the current plan period (2007-12) from renewable energy to avoid climate change effects, said United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido).
“If 20 per cent of the capacity expansion foreseen in the eleventh five-year Plan is shifted from coal to renewable energy, India would be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) by over 60 million tonnes per year, thereby helping contain the tide of Climate Change,” Unido advised in the statement.
