The belief that life begins at 40 may not be a myth anymore in Uttarakhand. In a Cabinet decision taken at a meeting here on Monday, the state government has increased the maximum age limit from 35 to 40 for government jobs in the general category.

"If you are 40, you are entitled to any government job in the general category," said a top government official.

The move is likely to benefit hundreds of people who are jobless but had crossed the threshold of 35. Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna had already announced that his government would initiate a recruitment drive to fill 40,000 posts lying vacant in the state government. A bonanza of government jobs is coming in the way of the jobless, the official added.

The upper age limit of direct recruitment in government jobs in the state had been reduced from 40 to 35 years, following an order of the Nainital High Court last year.

There had been a steep rise of nearly 0.14 million in unemployment among the youth in 2012-13.
