Uttarakhand to invite bids to develop five new hydel projects

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna on Friday said the government would invite bids for development of five new hydel projects with a capacity of 80-90 Mw in the state.

Chairing a review meeting of the department of energy at secretariat here, the Chief Minister however said all the bidding process should be completed in a week's time. During the meeting, top officials of the power department told the Chief Minister that the environment impact assessments (EIAs) of these five projects have already been completed. So, these projects are ready for development in the state which is facing 5-10 million units of power shortage daily.

To overcome power shortage, Bahuguna said power line between Meerut-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee will be increased from 350 Mw to 500 Mw. He said he would make a representation to the union power ministry in this regard.

Bahuguna also stated that the government would buy power from outside and not allow any power cuts in the state. The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited [UPCL], the sole power provider in the state.
