Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the terminal building of Vadodara’s Harni Airport.
Designed and built by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at a cost of Rs 160 crore, the new international terminal will increase the airport’s passengers handling capacity from the current 450 passengers to 700 per hour.
Modi said the Vadodara airport has become the second green airport after Kochi. “I am glad that the two airports in India have joined the green movement. The Vadodara airport is country’s second state-of-the-art airport after Kerala’s. The government will continue to develop existing airports,” said Modi after the inauguration.
According to AAI officials, Vadodara does not have international flights but because of this new development, it may get international flights by 2017. International flights for neighbouring countries will be available from the terminal, but there will be no direct service for the US or the UK, as the runway length is not enough to accommodate big aircraft. No international flight has been announced yet.
“As part of airports’ modernisation plan, we have developed this new terminal at the Vadodara airport, which will help handle international passengers traffic,” said Guruprasad Mohapatra, chairman of AAI. The airport has already been registered with the Limca Book of Records for the longest single sheet rooftop measuring 164.2 metres.
According to Vadodara airport officials, the new terminal at the airport in Harni, on the city outskirts, is spread over 18,120 sq mt and can handle 700 passengers (domestic plus international) per hour through 18 check-in counters.
The building has been designed according to the advance building management system. With advanced security systems, the terminal has energy-saving cooling mechanism, rainwater harvesting set-up and super sensitive fire safety alarm.
