VAT collection up by 22% in Tamil Nadu

VAT collection accounts for 90% of taxable revenue

VAT collection in Tamil Nadu has increased by 22% to Rs 51,245 crore. The state government has attributed this to strict norms implemented by the Department. According to Commercial Tax Department's Policy Note, which was placed by State Commercial Tax Minister M C Sampath, overall Tamil Nadu's VAT collection was Rs 51,245 crore in 2013-14 as compared to Rs 42,038 crore, a year ago, an increase of around 22%. Overall tax collection up by 18.73% and nearly 90% of the total taxable revenue is from VAT.

Despite a general slowdown in the Indian economy and a lean agricultural season in the State, this Department has mobilised a gross revenue of Rs 56,852 crore in 2013-2014, up by 18.73% over the previous year.

"This growth has been achieved by ensuring better tax management strategies. The Commercial Taxes Department plays a predominant role in mobilising the revenue for the State exchequer and contributes almost two-thirds,” according to the Department's Policy Note.
