Large-scale violence were reported from several parts of Jharkhand during the bandh called by the Maoists on Tuesday to oppose the anti-Naxalite operations in five rebel-hit states.
The rebels fired on a police patrolling vehicle and killed a policeman and injured 13 police personnel. Railway properties in several railway stations were destroyed in the state.
Four railway employees were kidnapped and released after several hours. The rebels also damaged several railway bridges.
Ranchi senior superintendent of police (SSP) Saket Kumar Singh told reporters that on Tuesday early morning CRPF and state police conducted a joint operation at Tupudana on the outskirts of the state capital (Ranch) and Torpa in adjoining Khunti district and seized 1095kg ammonium nitrate, 20,000 gelatine sticks, 3,795 electronic detonators, 9,838 ordinary detonators, 1,900 metre fuse wire and 4 mobile phones.The quantity of chemicals seized was enough to make at least 1,00 bombs, which could blow up a major portions of Ranchi district.
The SSP claimed that it was certainly one of the biggest explosives hauls ever made by the police in recent times.
